BORN WETWANG 1879. SON OF GEORGE AND ANN NICHOLSON, RAILWAY STREET, WET WANG, DRIFFIELD. ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. WIFE HANNAH NICHOLSON LIVED AT THIS ADDRESS. HE MARRIED HANNAH TURNER, ON 12/03/1905 AT BARNSLEY. HE WAS A FORMER ROYAL MARINE, RULLEYMAN, AND FIREMAN, LIVING WITH HIS WIFE, AND THREE CHILDREN, AT 67 CARLTON TERRACE, CARLTON, BARNSLEY. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL, 149 LBS WEIGHT, 38 INCH CHEST, TATTOO MARKS ON BOTH FOREARMS, CHEST AND LEG. HE ENLISTED AT BARNSLEY, ON 20/04/1915, AGED 34 YEARS AND 30 DAYS. JOINED THE 14TH BATTALION, YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT (2ND BARNSLEY PALS), SERVED IN EGYPT, DEFENDING THE SUEZ CANAL. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 11/03/1916. PROMOTED TO LANCE CORPORAL. HE WAS KILLED AT NAIME, NEAR SERRE, ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME, 1ST JULY 1916, AGED 37. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY, FOR 1 YEAR AND 93 DAYS. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, HANNAH, WHO MOVED TO 57 YORK STREET, AND 1 YORK TERRACE, BEDFORD STREET, HULL. THEY INCLUDED, A TESTAMENT, RAZOR IN A CASE, ELECTRIC TORCH AND COTTON BAG.
