BORN HULL 1889. SON OF CHARLES FRANCIS & ANNIE NIX, OF DRYPOOL, HULL.

HIS WIFE ELSIE MAY NIX, LIVED AT 2, STORY STREET, HULL, 16, ALASKA STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL AND 63, HODGSON STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE WAS EMPLOYED AT RECKITT’S CANNSTER WORKS FOR NINE YEARS.

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL (MM), ON 03/05/1916. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 25/10/1918. * HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ON ST MARY’S CHURCH WW1 MEMORIAL, THE ST MARKS STREET ROLL OF HONOUR AND THE RECKITTS WORK MEMORIAL.
Born Hull, 12/11/1889. Son of Charles Francis Nix (1869-1957) and Annie Maltson Rhodes, of 15 East Street, Drypool, Hull. He was educated at St. Peter’s School and a Reckitt’s Boiler Maker by trade. He enlisted in Hull when war began. He was married at St Peter’s Chuch, Hull, to Elsie May Bryce, on 29/10/1914. They lived at 2, Story Street, Hull, with their daughter. Served as Sergeant in the 11th East Yorkshire Regiment, (Hull Pals) in Egypt and France. Was awarded the Military Medal for bravery and devotion to duty at Oppy Wood. He was killed at Messines Ridge, on 29/09/1917, aged 28. Buried at Strand Military Cemetery, Hainaut, Belgium. His grave inscription reads, “HE DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE FROM WIFE, MOTHER & FATHER”

The Chaplain wrote of him: “He will be greatly missed, he was a fearless, and a true soldier, and his influence still lives among the men with whom he had been for the last four years.” He was awarded the Military Medal for ‘bravery and devotion to duty’.
Charles is buried in Strand Military Cemetery; he was 29 years old.
His death was recorded in the De Ruvigny Roll of Honour, Volume 5.
His young brother, James Nix, had been killed in 1915, aged 17.
