BORN HULL 1894. SON OF JAMES NORTH (1849-1907) & ALICE ANN WISE (1849-1923), OF 11, MONTROSE AVENUE, GIBSON STREET, HULL. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS, CHARLES AND JOHN, AND FOUR SISTERS.

MARRIED AT ST PAUL CHURCH, HULL, ON 24/02/1914. HUSBAND OF ELIZABETH HILDYARD (1894-1966), OF 12, ALPHA TERRAVE, CENTRAL STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS) AND 42, GARDEN VILLAGE, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON JAMES WILLIAM NORTH, BORN 25/08/1914.

EMPLOYED AS AN OIL BLENDER. DESCRIBED AS, 5 FOOT, 6.5 INCHES TALL, 36-38 INCH CHEST, 147 LBS WEIGHT.

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 05/01/1915. SERVED WITH THE 12TH EYR (HULL PALS), IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. DIED OF FACE AND SKULL WOUNDS, ON 20/07/1916, AGED 22. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY, FOR 1 YEAR AND 197 DAYS.

BURIED AT MERVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, NORD, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “NOT FORGOTTEN”.

HIS WIFE, ELIZABETH, RECEIVED HIS WAR PENSION OF 18 SHILLINGS AND NINE PENCE, ON 05/02/1917. SHE MOVED FREQUENTLY , TO SWANN STREET,  8 CLFFE TERRACE, GRANGE STREET AND 1 NORWOOD TERRACE, NORWOOD STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES). SHE MARRIED H.R. MALLORY, A CIVILIAN, ON 25/04/1918.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE MONTROSE AVENUE, GIBSON STREET, ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 02 October 1916).

HIS BROTHER, JOHN BELLARD NORTH (1880-1915) DIED IN HULL, IN 1915, AGED 35.

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JAMES SIDNEY NORTH 12/1384. Born in 1894, James was the youngest of eight children to James and Alice North of 11 Montrose Avenue, Gibson Street, Hull. An Oil Blender by trade, he married Elizabeth Hildyard at St. Paul’s in the city on 28th February 1914 and the couple lived at 12 Portland Avenue, Withernsea Street with their son, James Jnr. He enlisted at City Hall on 5th January 1915 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. A member of ‘B’ Company, James was wounded by shrapnel in the face and skull on 19th July 1916 and evacuated to the Casualty Clearing Stations so badly overrun during the early weeks of the Somme Offensive; he died there a day later. James Sidney North is buried in Merville Communal Cemetery; he was 22 years old.
