BORN BEVERLEY 1898. SON OF ARTHUR JOHN & VIOLET ELEANOR OLIVER, OF 12 LEO AVENUE, ARUNDEL STREET, HULL. A FORMER MEMBER OF HULL SEA SCOUTS & WITHERNSEA COASTGUARD.

HE JOIND TH NAVY, IN NOVEMBER 1916. SERVED ON HMS ‘ VINDICTIVE’ (OF ZEEBRUGGE AND OSTENDE RAIDS FAME), WHERE HE PASSED AS WIREMAN, SIGNALLER AND TORPEDO MAN. SERVED ON HMS “AREIEL”. DIED AT HIS POST, ON 02/08/1918, AGED 20. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 05/10/1918*

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, UK.

Jan Lettens 31/07/2010 Ariel was a British cargo of 3.428 tons that was sunk on 3rd Oct 1918 by the German submarine UB-105 (Rudolf Petersen), 54 miles N of Cape Tenes.
