BORN HULL 1887. BEFORE THE WAR, ALBERT J. O’NEIL, WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER.
HE MARRIED AT HULL, IN 1910. HUSBAND OF MARGARET (MAGGIE) CONBOY (1888-1940), WHO LIVED AT 15 OCKLEY TERRACE, WEST PARADE, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 3, EBENEEZER TERRACE, CLARENDON STREET, HULL. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN, NORA, ALBERT AND MARY.
HE ENLISTED AT HULL. SERVED WITH THE 6TH EAST YORKSHIRE PIONEERS. LEFT FOR THE DARDENELLES ON 30/07/1915. THE 6TH EYR TRAVELLED TO ALEXANDRIA, LEMNOS ANND IMBROS, BEFORE LANDING AT SULVA BAY, ON THE 7TH AUGUST 1915. HE SERVED WITH THE MACHINE GUN SECTION, “D” COMPANY, 6TH EYR AND WAS KILLED AT GALLIPOLI, ON 09/08/1915, AGED 28.
HIS NAME WAS RECORDED ON HULL’S ALEXANDRA STREET ROLL OF HONOUR.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, WHO MOVED TO 3 EBENEEZER TERRACE, CLARENDON STREET, HULL. HIS WIDOW AND THREE CHILDEN WERE GIVEN A WEEKLY PENSION, OF 20 SHILLINGS AND SIXPENCE, ON 31/03/1916.
REPORTED MISSING AT GALLIPOLI. HIS DEATH WAS CONFIRMED KILLED FOUR YEARS LATER. HIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS PUBLISHED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 20TH AUGUST 1919.
Notes: Turkish Prisoners of War records found at the TGS ATASE Directorate Archives, record forty four, 6th EYR Prisoners captured from “D” Company. There were also men from ‘A’, ‘B’ & ‘C’ Companies captured on the 9th August, but only one or two men from each company. Albert O’Neil is not on the list, so presumably was killed in action.
