BORN HULL 1898. YOUNGEST SON OF JOSEPH PAYNE (1866-1939) & SARAH ELIZABETH LOCKHAM (1869-1960), OF 53 NEW GEORGE STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 166 MERSEY STREET, HULL. HE HAD THREE OLDER SISTERS AND AND AN ELDER BROTHER, GERGE. EX BLUNDELL’S PAINT WORKER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS A DRIVER, IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. WAS WOUNDED DURING THE GERMAN SPRING OFFENSIVE IN 1918. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 23/03/1918, AGED 20. HE IS BURIED ON THE SOMME, FRANCE.

UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER SARAH ELIZABETH.

HE WAS PHOTOGRAPHED WITH HIS BROTHER, DRIVER, GEORGE PAYNE, RFA, IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 26/05/1915.
