BORN HULL 1875. SON OF WILLIAM & JOSEPHINE (WALKER). WIFE ELIZABETH PEARSON LIVED AT THIS PROBATE AND CWGC ADDRESS. CHIEF ENGINEER. DROWNED AS A RESULT OF ENEMY ACTION, ON 31/10/1917. AGED 42. HIS LEFT £327 IN HIS WILL TO THOMAS, CAPES, CLERK TO THE MINISTRY OF FOOD, AND CHARLES WARD, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF THE PRUDENTIAL ASSURANCE COMPANY. HIS NAME IS LISTED IN THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY ROLL OF HONOUR.
The British steamship Cambric SS was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-35 when 14 miles W. of Cape Shershel, Algeria, on October 31st, 1917 when on route from Tunis for England, with a cargo of iron ore. The captain and 23 of the crew were killed. Four men were taken prisoner by the submarine.Those lost from Hull included;
