BORN HULL 1883. HIS WIFE MARION PENROSE AND TWO CHILDREN LIVED AT THIS ADDRESS. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM & CAROLINE PENROSE. BEFORE JOINING THE NAVY HE WAS BOILER SCALER. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH MARCH 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
The steam Trawler, Halcyon, was built by Cochrane & Cooper, Ltd., Beverley in 1898 and owned at the time of her loss by J. Leyman Jr. was a British trawler of 190 tons.
On February 19th, 1917, Halcyon was sunk by a mine from the German submarine U-71 (Hugo Schmidt), off Butt of Lewis. 11 persons were lost.
