Petherbridge, Thomas Henry

BORN HULL 07/06/1857. SON OF THOMAS PETHERBRIDGE & MARY ANN (DENNISON). HE WAS A SHIP’S STEWARD & MARRIED TO ROSE NIXON.

HIS WIFE AND HIS ELEVEN CHILDREN LIVED AT 45, EASTBOURNE STREET, HULL. A FISHERMAN.

HE WAS STEWARD ON THE FISHING VESSEL, KING HARALD, WHICH EXPLODED AS IT LEFT GRIMSBY DOCKS, FOR THE FISHING GROUNDS. THREE CREW WERE KILLED WHEN THE SHIP’S ENGINE ACCIDENTALLY EXPLODED. THE BOARD OF INQUIRY REPORTED A SUPLUS CARBIDE CYLINDER WAS BEING STORED BELOW DECK WHEN IT FELL INTO THE REVOLVING ENGINE CRANK AND WAS CRUSHED. AN ACERTYLENE GAS WAS FORMED WHICH WAS IGNITED BY AN OIL LAMP IN THE ENGINEROOM. THE HULL OF THE SHIP WAS BLOWN UPWARDS AND OUTWARDS, CAUSING £6,000 DAMAGE. THE SKIPPER AND TWO OTHER CREW WERE SERVELY INJURED. THE SHIP WAS QUICKLY TOWED AND BEACHED TO AVOID SINKING. TWO BODIED WERE NEVER FOUND.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL, NEWINGTON, HULL.
