Pittaway, Alfred Henry

BORN HULL 1893. SON OF GEORGE EDWARD PITTAWAY (1863-1928) & ADA SELLARS (1870-1962), OF  73 SHARP STREET, NEWLAND AVENUE, HULL. (CWGC ADDRESS)

SON OF A JOINER. SECOND OF EIGHT CHILDREN. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.  HE WAS EMPLOYED AS A SAW MILL LABOURER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, SERVED WITH THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. DIED  NEAR FREZENBURG, BELGIUM, ON 20/04/1915, AGED 22. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, ADA.

HIS NAME IS LISTED IN THE “GOLDEN BOOK” AT HULL MINSTER, TO HULL’S WW1 CASUALTIES. HE IS ALSO COMMEMORATED AT THE YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.

HIS ELDEST BROTHER, PRIVATE, GEORGE RICHARD PITTAWAY (1892-1931), 1599. 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, TRANSFERRED TO THE 2ND NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. WAS REPORTED MISSING AND TAKEN PRISONER IN 1918. GEORGE SURVIVED THE WAR.
