Pregden, Albert William

BORN HULL 1900. ONLY SON OF MR ALBERT WILLIAM PREGDEN AND ALICE MAUDE MAY PREGDEN, OF 54 GORDON ROAD, FLEETWOOD, LANCS. HIS HULL ARMY ADDRESS WAS 1, JAMES TERRACE, ETON STREET, HULL, WHERE HE LIVED WITH HIS AUNT. HIS SISTER, DOROTHY, LIVED IN THE SAME STREET AT 58, ETON STREET, HULL. HIS UNCLES LIVED NEARBY ON BEAN STREET AND HESSLE ROAD, HULL. A TEENAGER WHO WORKED AS A FARM LABOURER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 16/05/1916 CLAIMING TO BE 18 YEARS OLD. ALTHOUGH ONLY 5FT 2IN TALL, WAS DESCRIBED AS BEING OF ‘GOOD’ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. HE TRANSFERRED TO FRANCE ON 17/09/1916 AND DIED OF WOUNDS, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916.
HIS PERSONAL EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS FATHER WHO IN 1917 WAS LIVING IN SELBY. THEY INCLUDED A PRAYER BOOK, WALLET, 2 PENCILS, PHOTOS AND SOME CIGARETTE CARDS WHICH HE HAD COLLECTED. HIS PENSION WENT TO HIS SISTER MRS KATE BIELBY, AT 45, WOODCOCK STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

HE WAS THE ONLY CASUALTY NAMED PREGDEN IN THE ENTIRE WAR AND IT SEEMS THAT THE FAMILY NAME DIED WITH HIM. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, 01/12/1916.
