Quibell, Samuel Boyd

Major, Samuel Boyd Quibell

Born Newark-on-Trent, 19/11/1890. Son of Oliver Quibell (1863-1945) and Elizabeth Holmes (1865-1956), of Shalom Lodge, Newark on Trent. His father manufactured farm fertilizers and sheep dip. He had two brothers and three sisters. After leaving Cambridge, he managed Holmes Tannery, in Hull. Was youngest serving Major in the Territorial. Served with the 4th East Yorkshires. Died of wounds on 02/02/1916, aged 25, at No:10 Casualty Clearing Station, Belgium. He left £1,762 in his will to his father, Oliver.

He lived at Hamlyn Avenue, Hull. Played rugby for Hull  & East Riding. Prominently connected with the Wesleyan Church, Coltman Street, Hull. His death was reported in the Hull Daily Mail, with his Photo, on 08/02/1916. He is remembered on the family grave at Newark Cemetery and the Newark WW1 Memorial. He is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. His CWGC grave inscription reads, “MAKE THEM TO BE NUMBERED WITH THY SAINTS IN GLORY EVERLASTING”

His brother, Captain, Arthur Holmes Quibell, DSO, served in the Notts & Derby Regiment.
