Raettig, Ralph Arthur

BORN HULL 1894. SECOND SON OF KARL FREDERICK MAX RAETTIG (1864-1938) & EDITH BELL (1870-1946), OF 12 DEE STREET, HESSLE ROAD, HULL. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. THEIR FATHER WAS FROM WITTENBERG, GERMANY AND A NATURALISED BRITISH CITIZEN. HE CHANGED HIS NAME TO CHARLES RAETIGG.

HE MARRIED AT HULL, IN 1916. HIS WIFE EVA MURIAL (APPLETON) RAETTIG AND THEIR SON, RALPH, LIVED AT 58 , DE LA POLE AVENUE, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS).

AN APPRENTICE MARINE ENGINEER. HE SERVED AS SECOND MATE, ON THE LIVERPOOL, STEAM SHIP, ‘ELVE’ AND DIED AT SEA, ON 11/01/1917, AGED 23.

HE LEFT AN OLDER BROTHER, MAX, AND SISTERS, BERTHA, AGNES, EVA AND EDITH. HIS YOUNGEST BROTHER, PRIVATE, JAMES RICHARD RAETTIG, WAS KILLED AT YPRES, ON 17/03/1916, AGED 19.
BOTH THIER NAMES ARE RECORDED ON THE HESSLE ROLL OF HONOUR, ALL SAINTS PARISH CHURCH.
