BORN HULL, 1891. SON OF ALFRED RALPH (1867-1931) AND (SARAH) JANE O’CONNOR (1867-1932), OF 4, GREENFIELD SQUARE, SALTHOUSE LANE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). RECORDED AS A WORKHOUSE “PRISONER” AND GENERAL LABOURER IN THE 1911 CENSUS.

HE SERVED WITH THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 10/09/1914. KILLED IN ACTION ON 28/10/1914, AGED 23. BURIED IN FRANCE.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ST MARYS CHURCH, LOWGATE WW1 MEMORIAL, ST CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH WW1 MEMORIAL, JARRATT STREET, HULL & HULL’S SYKES STREET ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 09 October 1916).

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, JANE, AT MARRINERS COURT, SYKES STREET, HULL.

Kim Semmence writes on 07/11/2015: The Register of Soldier’s Effects states that Albert Ralph’s sole legatee was his mother, Jane. I’ve done some spadework and attached him to Alfred
Ralph and Sarah Jane O’Connor, who married in 1890. They are very difficult to keep tabs on – if you have a look at the Hull Daily Mail, you’ll see that at one point both parents were in prison and three sons, including Albert, in trouble for theft. The Irish origins explain why he’s on the St Charles board.
