Rayton, John James

BORN HULL 1897. ONLY SON OF JOHN THOMAS RAYTON (1871-1906) & ANN ELIZABETH LAMMING (1869-), OF LORD’S LANE, BARROW ON HUMBER. HE HAD TWO SISTERS, EDITH AND DORIS. WORKED AS A SHIP BUILDER’S ERRAND BOY AND THEN AS A “CRANE LAD” ON THE GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY.

HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON THE 24TH JULY 1916 AND SERVED WITH THE 8TH LINCOLNS. HIS ARMY SERVICE RECORD DESCRIBE HIME AS 5 FOOT 4.5 INCHES TALL, 33 INCH CHEST SIZE, 114 LBS WEIGHT. DIED OF SPINAL MENIGHITIS, AT WHITECHURCH HOSPITAL, CARDIFF, WALES, ON 25/04/1917, AGED 19. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS MOTHER AND SISTER EDITH.

HE IS BURIED AT BARROW-UPON-HUMBER CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE GAVE HIS LIFE”
