Joseph Raywell

BORN HULL 1898. SON OF ELIZA ELLIS SPENCELEY (1867-1951) & THE LATE JOSEPH RAYWELL (1866-1911), OF 8, SEFTON TERRACE, ROSAMOND STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. AT THE AGE OF EVELEN HE WAS ACCUSED OF STEALING GRAPES FROM A COVERED MARKER STALL WITH TWO OTHER BOYS (HULL DAILY MAIL, 16/12/1908). REMANDED FOR 7 DAYS.

HE SERVED IN THE WAR FOR THREE AND HALF YEARS. HAD JUST BEEN DEMOBILIZED FOR TEN WEEKS AFTER WHEN HIS FISHING SHIP STRUCK A MINE. PRESUMED DROWNED ON 13/03/1919, AGED 21. HIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS PRINTED IN THE HDM ON 11/04/1919. HE IS LISTED ON THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY ROLL OF HONOUR.
Built as the SCOTLAND for Hull Steam Fishing & Ice Co Ltd, Hull; Yard No 182; Launch Date: 17/03/1897; Lloyd´s Register 1918-19 No 758; In Jan 1919 sold to B. Knowles, Hull. The Hull trawler SCOTLAND (H348) sunk 15 miles SE of Flamborough Head, possibly mined.
CREW LOST ON SCOTLAND (H348), missing in North Sea, presumed struck mine, 7th March, 1919.
