BORN HULL 1883. HOLY TRINITY. SON OF WILLIAM & ELIZABETH READER, OF 16 ADELAIDE STREET, HULL.
HIS WIFE LIVED AT 69 ADELAIDE STREET WITH HER SON GUNNER, F H ATKINSON, RFA. HE HAD TWO STEP CHILDREN, GEORGE ERNEST ATKINSO, AND EDITH MAY ATKINSON AND THREE CHILDREN, EVERLYN, MURIEL AND JOHN.
JOHN READER WORKED ON THE HULL TRAM CARS. HE ALSO CAME FROM A MILITARY FAMILY. HIS BROTHER STAFF SGT, JAMES WILLIAM READER WAS A RIDING INSTRUCTOR WITH THE EAST RIDING IMPERIAL YEOMANRY, WHO HAD SERVED WITH THE 9TH LANCERS FOR 21 YEARS. ANOTHER BROTHER WAS CSM, JOSEPH READER, 20TH HUSSARS, WHO HAD BEEN INVALIDED, BUT STILL SERVING IN COLCHESTER.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL AND ALSO SERVED WITH TH HUSSARS. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 27/01/1916, AGED 33.
JACK READER’S DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH ON 26TH FEBRUARY 1916. * HIS PHOTOGRAPH ALSO APPEARS IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL 10TH JUNE 1915. * HE LEFT HIS ARMY EFFECTS TO HIS WIDOW LUCRETIA ATKINSON (NEE CALLIS) WHO HE MARRIED IN 1906. HE HAD ONE DAUGHTER EVERLYN, BORN IN 1911. HE NEVER SAW HIS SON JACK WHO WAS BORN ON 30/01/1916, THREE DAYS AFTER HE WAS KILLED.
HE LEFT A WIDOW AND FIVE CHILDREN, RESIDING AT 3, NEWPORT TERRACE, CAMPBELL STREET, HULL. (WAR PENSION AND HULL DAILY MAIL ADDRESS, 09/03/1916).
