Rhodes, Archibald

Withernsea WW1 Memorial, Queens Street. The memorial was erected in 1923 at a cost of £451, the funds for which were collected through public subscription. A service of dedication was held in 1924. Inscribed in four columns, are the names of sixty-four men killed in World War I.

BORN GOOLE 10/09/1876. SON OF CALEB (1847-1909) & HANNAH MARY BURTON (1850-1923), FROM WITHERNSEA. ONE OF TWELVE CHILDREN. LIVED WITH BROTHER REGINALD AT 5, UNION STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS). WORKED AS A FRUIT MERCHANT.

HE EMIGRATED TO CANADA. WORKED AS A LABOURER. ENLISTED IN VANCOUVER, ON 07/11/1914, AGED 38. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 5 INCHES TALL, 41 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, RED HAIR. SERVED IN THE 29TH BRITISH COLUMBIA BATTALION IN THE CANANDIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. HE WAS KILLED AT YPRES ON 06/04/1916, AGED 39.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE MENIN GATE MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.
HIS SISTER, DOROTHY, DIED IN BEVERLEY IN 1916, AGED 25.

HE IS ALSO COMMEMORATED ON THE WITHERNSEA WW1 MEMORIAL.
