Rhodes, Thomas Alfred

BORN HULL 1884. SON OF RICHARD FREAR & ANNIE ELIZABETH RHODES OF 100 KENT STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN.

HE WAS A SAWMILL LABOURER AND MARRIED IN 1904. HIS WIFE, LAVINIA LOTHERINGTON AND SIX CHILDREN (THOMAS, ANNIE, DORIS, GEORGE, EDITH & VIOLET), LIVED AT 8, LOUISA TERRACE, HUME STREET, HULL AND LATER 86, KENT STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. PROMOTED TO CORPORAL, 8TH EAST YROKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION ON 16/11/1916, AGED 33. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS WIDOW, LAVINIA. SHE WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 35 SHILLINGS, ON 11TH JUNE 1919.

HIS BODY WAS NOT RECOVERED AND HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING ON THE SOMME.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, GEORGE ARTHUR RHODES, ALSO OF THE 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT WAS KILLED FOUR MONTHS EARLIER, ON 21/07/1916, AGED 28. BOTH BROTHERS ARE COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
