Roberts, Richard

BORN HULL 1890. SON OF JOSEPH WILLIAM & HARRIET ROBERTS. A DRILL GRINDER. HE LIVED AT 5 WINCHESTER ROAD, SALFORD, LANCASHIRE. HE ENLISTED AT SALFORD, WITH HIS YOUNGER BROTHER JOSEPH. BOTH JOINED THE 15TH LANCASHIRE FUSILIERS. HE MARRIED CHARLOTTE MARY FISHER, IN SALFORD ON 16/10/1915, AND THEY MOVED TO WEASTE, LANCS. HE WAS KILLED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME, WITH HIS BROTHER, JOSEPH ON THE 1ST JULY 1916, AGED 26. THEY DIED THE SAME DAY, AND ARE BOTH COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. HE LEFT SISTER, RACHEL, ALICE AND MAGGIE. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, CHARLOTTE. THEY HAD BEEN MARRIED FOR JUST NINE MONTHS.
