SON OF WILLIAM & LATE ANNIE RUSHTON, OF 429 HESSLE ROAD, HULL.

ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. KILLED AT SERRE, 13/11/1916, AGED 24. BURIED AT EUSTON ROAD CEMETERY, FRANCE.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 24/11/1916. COMMEMORATED ON ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH MEMORIAL, NEWINGTON, HULL.

Hull Pals Memorial Post. CPL WILLIAM ARTHUR RUSHTON 12/267. Born In October 1892, William was the eldest of six children to William and Annie Rushton of 429 Hessle Road, Hull. A Labourer by trade he married Daisy May Grange at Sculcoates Register Office in 1910 and the couple lived at 6 Colenso Avenue, Edinburgh Street with their daughter Elsie Annie. William enlisted at City Hall on 15th September 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals. One of the Originals, he left Devonport bound for Alexandria, Egypt on 12th December 1915 and served in the garrison defending Suez until 29th February 1916 when they left Port Said for Marseilles and then north to the trenches of the Western Front. William was wounded by shrapnel in the right hand on 18th July 1916 but was soon back in the line. He was killed in action on 13th November 1916 during the last pointless action of the Somme campaign, as the 12th and 13th Battalions spearheaded an attack on German positions around Serre. He is buried in Euston Road Cemetery; a young father of 24.
