BORN HULL 1887. SON OF MARTHA SANDS (1853-1943), OF 10 CROYLAND AVENUE, HOLLAND STREET, HULL. SON OF A GROCER. HE HAD THREE SISTERS AND TWO BROTHERS. WORKED AS A PAINTER AND PAPER HANGER.

HE MARRIED ELIZABETH SHEARD (1890-1963), ON 10/11/1915, AT ST PETER’S CHURCH, DRYPOOL. HIS WIFE ELIZABETH LIVED AT 26, CHURCH STREET, HULL.

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL. PALS, ON 24/01/1916. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7.5 INCHES TALL, 36 INCH CHEST, 123 LBS WEIGHT. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 07/05/1916. SERVED WITH THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 10/08/1916, OPPOSITE LA BASSEE. HE HAD SERVED JUST 200 DAYS IN THE ARMY AND 96 DAYS AT THE FRONT. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ELIZABETH.
HIS BROTHER, WALTER SANDS, RAMC, LIVED AT 116 WELBECK STREET. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE REFORM STREET MEMORIAL.
