BORN HULL 1894. HULL PAL. SON OF EDWARD STEELE SAUNBY (1864-1947). & EMILY WOODWARD 91868-1949), OF 29, SANDRINGHAM STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD ONE BROTHER AND TWO SISTERS.

PRIOR TO WAR HE WORKED WAS A SHIPPING CLERK, ON THE STAFF OF THE ELLERMAN – WILSON SHIPPING LINE.

HE ENLISTED IN THE “HULL COMMERCIALS”, IN SEPTEMBER 1914. SERVED WITH THE 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. WAS WOUNDED IN JUNE 1916. TRANSFERRED TO THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRAINED AS A LEWIS GUNNER. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 08/02/1918, AGED 24. BURIED AT EPHEY WOOD CEMETERY, SOMME, FRANCE.

HE LEFT HIS ARMY EFFECTS AND £127 IN HIS WILL, TO HIS FATHER, EDWARD, WHO WAS ALSO A SHIPPING CLERK AT THIS PROBATE ADDRESS.

HE IS LISTED ON THE ELLERMAN WILSON LINE, CRICKET & ATHLETIC CLUB’S ROLL OF HONOUR. ALSO COMMEMORATED ON ST JOHN THE BAPTIST WAR MEMORIAL, NEWINGTON, HULL.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 15TH FEBRUARY 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *.
