Hull Pals Memorial Post. L/CPL FRED SAVAGE 12/337. Born in 1892, Fred was the fourth of seven children and eldest son of Anthony and Emma Savage of 23 Napier Terrace, Norfolk Street, Hull. A Labourer by trade he enlisted at City Hall on 16th September 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. After serving in Egypt defending Suez, the Pals arrived in France on March 8th, landing at Marseilles and catching the train north to Armentieres and the trenches of the Western Front. Fred was promoted from Private to Lance Corporal on 13th June so must have proved himself a capable soldier. He was killed in action on 13th November 1916 during the last tragic attack of the Somme campaign and his body never recovered; Fred Savage is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; he was 24 years old. Perhaps sparing her a broken heart, Emma Savage had passed away in 1910. Fred’s effects were returned to his father and tell their own story- letter, photos, postcards, mirror, handkerchief, false teeth, cigarette papers, Psalm book, wallet.
