BORN HULL 1875. SON OF JAMES & ANNIE SCOTT. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN INCLUDING SIX SONS. BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED FOR MESSRS HORSLEY & SMITH, HEDON ROAD.
HE HAD ALSO SERVED EIGHT YEARS IN INDIA AS A REGULAR SOLDIER.
HE MARRIED ROSE ANN HILL (1881-1918), AT SCULCOATES, REGISTRY OFFICE HULL, IN 1911. THEIR DAUGHTER ROSE WAS BORN IN 1913.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS LANCE SERGEANT, 3/6524, IN THE 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT IN FRANCE. HE HAD ALREADY LOST TWO BROTHERS IN THE WAR AND ANOTHER TWO BROTHERS WERE SERVING, ONE IN FRANCE, THE OTHER IN INDIA. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 18/08/1916, AGED 41. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING ON THE SOMME.
HE LEFT A WIDOW, ROSE, AND SIX CHILDREN. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO ROSE UNTIL HER DEATH IN 1918 AND THEN TO HER SISTER, CATHERINE GIBLIN. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH ON 15TH SEPTEMBER 1916.*
HIS ELDEST BROTHER, LANCE CORPORAL, WILLIAM HENRY SCOTT, 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, DIED IN BELGIUM, ON 07/01/1916, AGED 44. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND EIGHT CHILDREN AT 22 HOOD STREET, HULL. (ONE OF THEM, JAMES SCOTT, ALSO KILLED IN 1918, SERVING WITH THE TYNESIDE SCOTS, AGED 19)
HIS OTHER BROTHER, PRIVATE, RICHARD SCOTT, 8061, 1ST NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS WAS KILLED IN BELGIUM, 10/01/1915, AGED 33. HE LEFT A WIDOW AT 26 EGTON STREET, HULL. THE DEATH OF THE THREE SCOTT BROTHERS HAD LEFT TWENTY CHILDREN WITHOUT A FATHER.
