Samuel Hawkins Shakespeare, 13th EYR

BORN HULL 1894. SON OF THOMAS & THE LATE SARAH SHAKESPEARE, OF 83 BARMSTON STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE WORKED AT MESSRS ROSE, DOWN AND THOMPSON. HE WAS UNMARRIED AND LIVED WITH HIS PARENTS. HE WAS ALSO A CHOIR BOY AND SERVED AT ST SILAS’ CHURCH. HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. SERVED WITH THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. WAS KILLED AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 22.
A COMRADE WHO HE HAD ASKED TO RETURN A PURSE AND SOME PERSONAL BELONGINGS REPORTED THAT SAM HAD BEEN WOUNDED IN THE LEG AND ARM, BUT REFUSED TO GO TO THE DRESSING STATION. HE STAYED AT HIS POST AND WAS FINALLY KILLED BY A BULLET TO THE HEAD. A MEMORIAL SERVICE WAS HELD FOR HIM AT ST SILAS CHURCH. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 5TH DECEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.*
