William Henry Shallcross

BORN NEW HOLLAND, LINCS 1860. SON OF THOMAS SHALLCROSS (1834-1864) AND EMMA DOUGHTY (1839-1901). HE MARRIED AT HULL, IN 1880. HIS WIFE ANN ELIZABETH HORTON (1860-1919), LIVED AT THIS ADDRESS. THEY HAD NINE CHILDREN, EIGHT OF WHICH DIED IN INFANCY. HE HAD BEEN AT SEA SINCE 16 YEARS OLD AND WORKED AS A MARINE FIREMAN. HE SERVED ON THE STAMER “CAMBRIC” WHICH WAS SUNK ON 31/10/1917. HE DROWNED. AGED 57. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND ONE SON.

The British steamship Cambric SS was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-35 when 14 miles W. of Cape Shershel, Algeria, on October 31st, 1917 when on route from Tunis for England, with a cargo of iron ore. The captain and 23 of the crew were killed. Four men were taken prisoner by the submarine.Those lost from Hull included;
