SON OF JOHN DEAN SHEARD (1857-1918) & SARAH PYBUS GARDINER (1858-1924), OF 23 SARAH ANN’S TERRACE, SPYVEE STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS), OF 8 MARINE PARADE, SPYVEE STREET, HULL AND 10 QUEENS AVENUE, SUBWAY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES). HE HAD ONE BROTHER AND FIVE SISTERS. EMPLOYED AS A WATERMAN.
ENLISTED HULL. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 22/01/1915. SERVED WITH THE 2ND BATTALION, COLDSTREAM GUARDS. KILLED IN ACTION, ON THE SOMME, ON 16/09/1916, AGED 24. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS FATHER JOHN. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. HIS MOTHER WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 11 SHILLINGS FOR THE LOSS OF HER SON FROM 19/06/1917.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE SPYVEE STREET MEMORIAL. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN HDM 27/10/1916. (REGIMENT LISTED AS NFUS, BUT SAME SERIAL NUMBER).
HIS BROTHER, DEAN SHEAD (1888-1915), WAS A SHIPS MASTER AND ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED IN HULL ON 10/12/1915, AGED 27. HIS FATHER DIED IN 1918.
