Pte, Robert Shepherdson, 2nd Cheshire Regiment

BORN HULL 16/03/1895. SCULCOATES. SON OF FREDERICK SHEPHERDSON (1863-1938) AND ALICE MARIA SMITH (1868-1945), OF, 11 , HAVERLOCK STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND  23 , DORSET STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF A BRICKLAYER. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. EDUCATED AT HULL COUNTY COUNCIL SCHOOL. HE WORKED AS A CARTER AND PORTER FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS. HE JOINED THE NORTHUMBRIAN FIELD AMBULANCE, ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS, IN SEPTEMBER 1912. WAS CALLED UP WHEN WAR BEGAN, ON 4TH AUGUST 1914. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 19TH APRIL 1915, WHERE HE SAW MUCH FIGHTING. WAS INVALIDED TO ENGLAND IN JANUARY 1917, SUFFERING FROM TRENCH FEVER. ON RECOVERY, HE PROCEEDED TO SALONIKA AND WAS ATTACHED TO NO: 29 GENERAL HOSPITAL THERE. WAS SUBSEQUENTLY TRANSFERRED TO THE 2ND CHESHIRE REGIMENT.

HE WAS REPORTED WOUNDED AND MISSING IN SALONIKA ON 15TH APRIL 1918. DIED AS A REPATRAITED PRISONER OF WAR. A COMRADE WROTE, “BOB’S LUCK WAS AMAZING. HE GOT ONE OUT OF MANY ATIGHT CORNER WHILE STRETCHER BEARING IN FRANCE.”

HIS DEATH WAS RECORDED IN THE DU RIVGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 5, PAGE 150.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 30TH DECEMBER 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE DOIRAN MEMORIAL, GREECE.

HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, LEWIS SHEPHERDSON, SERVED IN THE GUARDS, MACHINE GUN UNIT.
