BORN HULL 1877. SON OF THOMAS AND ANN SHIELDS, OF 8, SARAH’S PLACE, WILSON ROW, HULL. A SINGLE MAN. HE LIVED WITH HIS SISTER, MRS MARGARET FLEMING AT THIS 15 DALES TERRACE, PELHAM STREET, HEDON ROAD (ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS). HE HAD BROTHERS ROBERT & EDWARD AND THREE SISTERS. A LABOURER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7 INCHES TALL, 157 LBS WEIGHT, 36.5 INCH CHEST.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 06/10/1914, AGED 37. SERVED WITH THE 12TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT (HULL PALS), IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. WOUNDED IN CHEST AND BACK, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916. INVALIDED TO ENGLAND. RETURNED TO FRANCE ON 16/03/1917. TRANSFERRED TO THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION, ON 06/04/1917. APPOINTED LANCE CORPORAL. AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL (MM) FOR BRAVERY IN 1917. DIED OF GUN SHOT WOUNDS TO THE HEAD, ON 22/10/1917, AGED 40. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS SISTER MARGARET, INCLUDING HIS MILITARY MEDAL WHICH WAS PRESENTED TO HER PUBLICALLY.
HE IS BURIED AT LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM.
