He had enlisted in the Royal Navy on 19/04/1900. He worked as a sailor and as a blast furnaceman. He enlisted in the Household cavalry at West Melton. Served as Private 6418, “nd Dragoon Guards (Queens Bays). Killin action at Ypres, on 13/05/1915, aged 28. He left a widow and young daughter. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.
His Name is listed on the Hull Walker Street Memorial as “JW Shirecliffe”, but there are no CWGC casualties of this surname. Hull connection not known.
