Corporal, Ernest Slater, 17th AIF

Born Hull, 22/02/1897. Son of Charlotte Ann Rose (1865-1941) and the late William Slater (1861-1902), of 4 Princess Ter Elm Street, Queens Road, Hull (1911 Census) and 20, Greenbank Street, Marrackville, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (CWGC address). Son of a gas works labourer. Native of Hull, Yorkshire. He had three brothers and three sisters. He emigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, in 1911. Departed from Liverpool, on the steam ship “Belgic”, on 23/09/1911.

He resided at 20 Greenland, Marrrickville, New South Wales, Australia with his Mother, Charlotte Ann Slater; Worked as a Boot packer

Enlisted in Australia, on 19/01/1916. Embarked from Sydney on 09/04/1916, with the 30th Infantry Battalion, 8th Infantry Brigade, 6th Reinforcements; transferred as Corporal 3032; 17th Battalion Australian Infantry; Killed in action on 14/05/1918, aged 21.

Buried at Corbie Communal Cemetery; Corbie, France. Grave Ref: Plot 2, Row E, Grave 56; His grave inscription, reads, “A Loving Son, Noble and True, Ended his life as he lived it through”

His brothers who were all born in Hull, also served with the Australians during WW1. – William Slater (1895-1955) served in the 17th Australian Imperial Force. His other brother, John Thomas Slater (1890-1965) served with the 1st Pioneer Australians. His youngest brother, Frederick Slater (1898-1936) served at Victoria barracks, New South Wales, Australia
