Sleight, George

Born Hull 1889. Pte. George Sleight 23967 was the son of Charles Arthur (b 1851 d 26/5/1899 Hull) & Martha Sleight (b 1846 Rycroft d 1914 Hulll). George had siblings Violet b 1877, Charles Arthur b 1881 & William b 1879. He married Florence Young in 1908 at St Mary and St Peter, Hull and they lived at 8 Salmon Grove, Liverpool St, Hessle Rd. Prior to his enlistment on 03/06/1916 George was a labourer in the fish manure trade – his father had been a fish curer and merchant before him, George and Florence had 5 children Florence Violet b 15/7/1908, George 18/02/1910, Rose 10/07/1912, Lillian 14/12/1913 and Charles Arthur 24/4/1916.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE GEORGE SLEIGHTS 2396. George was born in Hull, and killed in action on 12th April 1918 during the German Spring Offensive. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
