BORN SUTTON, HULL 1888. SON OF BENJAMIN SMALES (1859-1937) & SARAH ANN BARNES (1863-1913), OF 15 HOWE STREET, HULL AND 113 LIME STREET, HULL. HE HAD SIX BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS. AN OIL MILL PRESSMAN. WORKED FOR ROBSON’S OIL AND CAKE MILLS, WINCOLMLEE, HULL. HE MARRIED ELIZABETH ANN DUFFEY , AT SCULCOATES, HULL, IN 1907, THEY LIVED AT 8 DAVIDS TERRACE, SPYVEE STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS), 32 HOOD STREET, THE GROVES, HULL, AND 6 ST GEORGES AVENUE, BOULEVARD, HULL (PENSION LEDGER ADDRESS). ENLISTED HULL. SERVED AS SERGEANT, IN THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 25/09/1916, AGED 28. COMMEMORATED AT THIEPVAL, SOMME, FRANCE. HE HAD BEEN AT THE FRONT FOR TWO YEARS, AND HAD RETURNED FROM LEAVE, TWO MONTHS BEFORE HIS DEATH.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ELIZABETH ANN, AND THEIR TWO SONS. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 21/10/1915, and 20/10/1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON HULL’S ST MARKS STREET MEMORIAL.
HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, PRIVATE, BENJAMIN SMALES, 3/6509, 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 01/07/1916, AGED 19.
