Smith, Arthur

Born Halsham, Yorkshire, 1865. Son of Thomas Tindle Smith and Mary Jane Curtis, of 11 Florence Terrace, Waterloo Street, Hull. Lost at sea, on 09/06/1918, on the Steam ship “Tewfikieh”. His younger brother, Alexander Gardiner Smith served on HMS Queen Mary, and lost at Jutland, on 31/05/1916, aged 43.

SS Tewfikieh, built by R. Napier & Sons, Glasgow in 1893 and owned at the time of her loss by Khedivial Mail SS. & Graving Dock Co., London, was a British steamer of 2.490 tons.
On June 9th, 1918, Tewfikieh, on a voyage from Hull to Alexandria with a cargo of coal and general cargo, was sunk by the German submarine UB-105 (Wilhelm Marschall), 115 miles WNW of Alexandria. 5 persons were lost.
