HE ENLISTED IN HULL. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 48739, IN THE  82ND TRAINING BATTALION. TRANSFERRED TO THE 5TH KING’SOWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. REPORTED MISSING AND LATER CONFIRMED KILLED ON 12/09/1918, AGED 31. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO WIDOW, ANNIE ELIZABETH SMITH AND TWO CHILDREN, OF NEWLAND AVENUE (1911 CENSUS ADDRESS), AND LATER 5, ST JOHN’S GROVE, ELM STREET, QUEENS ROAD, HULL (HULL DAILY MAIL ADDRESS 19/02/1919)

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 11/02/1919, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, PRIVATE, ROBERT SMITH, 2ND EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT LOOS, ON 29/09/1915, AGED 25
