Smith, Robert

BORN HULL 1883. SECOND SON OF ROBERT SMITH (1856-1925) & GERTRUDE BARKER (1856-1928), AT 109, WESTBOURNE AVENUE, HULL (1911 CENSUS ADDRESS) & LATER AT 78 TRINITY ROAD, BRIDLINGTON. HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS. AN OLD HYMERIAN AND SON OF AN OIL MERCHANT. HE WAS A COMMERCIAL TRAVELLER.

HE SERVED AS SECOND LIEUTENANT, WITH THE 2ND KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY AND WAS KILLED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME, AGED 34. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 11TH JULY 1916.
HE LEFT BROTHERS, HERBERT JOSEPH SMITH, HENRY NORMAN SMITH, REGINALD SMITH, CYRIL SMITH AND GERALD GORDON SMITH. HE LEFT £5,361 IN HIS WILL, TO HIS BROTHER, REGINALD SMITH, A TIMBER MERCHANT,
HIS DEATH IS COMMEMORATED ON A PLAQUE, AND A STAINED GLASS WINDOW IN THE CHAPEL, AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, HULL.

HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, CAPTAIN, GERALD GORDON SMITH, 13457, ROYAL TANK CORPS, DIED ON 19/06/1942, DURING WW2. HE HAD SERVED AS A 2ND LIETENANT WITH THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT IN FRANCE ON 17/04/1915 AND LATER THE TANK COPRS DURING WW1.
