BORN SETTRINGTON, HULL 1888. HUSBAND OF FLORENCE SMITH, OF 1 CLAREMONT AVENUE, SCARBOROUGH STREET, HULL AND 66 MANCHESTER STREET, HULL. SON OF WILLIAM SMITH (1865-1931) AND ADA BULMER (1863-1895), OF SETTRINGHAM, MALTON & HULL. BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED AS A FARM WAGGONER AND DOCK LABOURER.
HE ENLISTED OCTOBER 1915. SERVED AS A BOMBARDIER IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. DIED ON WOUNDS, ON 31ST OCTOBER 1917. HE WAS 29 YEARS OLD AND LEFT A WIDOW AND FOUR CHILDREN AT 66 MANCHESTER STREET, HULL WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
A BROTHER SERVED IN THE NAVY, ANOTHER BROTHER WHO WAS BADLY WOUNDED AND A PRISONER OF WAR FOR THREE YEARS HAD BEEN EXCHANGED.
TWO BROTHERS IN LAW HAD BEEN KILLED AND TWO MORE, ONE OF WHICH HAD BEEN WOUNDED THREE TIMES WERE STILL SERVING IN FRANCE. STANLEY’S DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH NOVEMBER 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE IS BURIED AT GREVILLERS BRITISH CEMETERY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “IN THE MIDST OF LIFE WE ARE IN DEATH”.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE SETTRINGTON WW1 MEMORIAL.
