
Born at Settrington, Malton, Yorks, 1888. Son of William Smith – 66 Manchester Street, Hessle Road, Hull.;
Husband of Florence Smith (born 24/09/1885), of 1, Claremont Avenue, Scarborough Street, Hessle Road., Hull. He had four children, Florence, Sidney, Rosanna and Mary Elizabeth.
Reported as died of wounds, on 31/10/1917, aged 29, at No3 Casualty Clearing Station. Served in the 49th Battery, 40th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
He left a widow, Mary Elizabeth Smith (born 24/9/1885) and four children, Florence, Sidney, Roseanna and Mary Elizabeth, all born between 1912-1918.
One of his brothers served in the Navy. Another brother had been a prisoner of war, for 3 years, in Germany and recently exchanged. Two of his Brother in laws had been killed in the war. Another two were serving in France and one of these had been wounded three times.
His death was reported in the Hull daily Mail, on 09/11/1917, with his photograph. *
Buried at Grevillers Britsh Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. His grave inscription, reads, “IN THE MIDST OF LIFE WE ARE IN DEATH”
