BORN HULL 19/03/1885. ELDEST SON OF ANNIE MCGOWAN & THE LATE PATRICK SNEE (EYR), OF 15 SARAH’S TERRACE, COURTNEY STREET, HULL. HE HAD ONE BROTHER DANIEL AND A SISTER ANN. WORKED AS AN OIL MILL LABOURER AT BLUNDELLS. RESIDED AT 16 ETHEL GROVE, BARNSLEY STREET, HULL. HE ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY, ON 28/08/1914. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 3 INCHES, 122 LBS, 35 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, LIGHT BROWN HAIR. RELIGION: ROMAN CATHOLIC. HE HAD A TATTOO ON HIS RIGHT FOREARM – A TOMBSTONE WITH THE WORDS “IN MEMORY OF DEAR HELEN”. HE DID NOT TAKE TO ARMY LIFE AND WAS RECORDED AS BEING ABSENT FIVE TIMES WHILE TRAINING. HE WAS DISCHARGED AS PHYSICALLY UNFIT ON 22/12/1915. HE SUFFERED FROM BRONCHITIS AND EXCESSIVE HEART STRAIN DUE TO HIS WORK AS A LABOURER. HIS ARMY CHARACTER BEING DESCRIBED AS “INDIFFERENT”. HIS ADDRESS ON DISCHARGE WAS 5 ANNIES TERRACE, WALLER STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD. HE DIED AT HOME TWO WEEKS LATER AND BURIED AT HEDON ROAD CEMETERY. HE IS LISTED AS DIED, ON HULL’s COURTNEY STREET MEMORIAL.
