BORN GREAT YARMOUTH, 1887. ELDEST SON OF CHARLES HERBERT SNOWLEY (1860-1931), AND ELLEN LAVINIA POWLEY (1862-1945), OF 63 ALEXANDER STREET, SPRING BANK, HULL. SON OF A DOCK LABOURER.
HE WORKED AS A RAILWAY PORTER. THIS WAS HIS ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 3 INCH TALL, 140 LBS WEIGHT, 35 INCH CHEST, ‘GOOD’ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT.
HE ENLISTED IN THE 13TH EYR (HULL PALS, ON 16/11/1914, AGED 27 YEARS AND 1 MONTH. HE TRAINED AT BEVERLEY AND RIPON. SERVED IN EGYPT AND POSTED TO FRANCE ON 08/03/1916. HE DIED OF ALCOHOLIC POISONING DRINKING RUM, ON 25/01/1917, AGED 29. HE WAS IN THE EARLY STAGES OF PNEUMONIA AND IT LED TO HEART FAILURE, ON 25/01/1917, AGED 29. HE IS BURIED AT GEZAINCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, ON THE SOMME. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 2 YEARS AND 75 DAYS.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, ELLEN. THEY INCLUDED A DISC, LETTERS, CARD. A BIBLE, METAL CIGARETTE CASE, MATCH BOX HOLDER, AND HANDKERCHIEF.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 23RD FEBRUARY 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, PRIVATE, ARTHUR ALBERT SNOWLEY, ENLISTED IN THE SAME 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION, AND WAS KILLED, ON 09/10/1917, AGED 19.
