BORN HULL 1888. SON OF WILLIAM STAHERS (1864-1935) & MARY ANN SAYER (1866-1954), OF 57, DANSOM LANE, HULL. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. HE WORKED AS A GENERAL LABOURER. MARRIED GERTRUDE GOMERSALL (1881-1941), AT HULL, IN 1913. HIS WIFE GERTRUDE, AND TWO SONS, WILLIAM AND KENNETH, LIVED AT 50, ST MARKS STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. SERVED WITH THE 12TH EYR IN EGYPT AND FRANCE, KILLED IN ACTION ON 13/11/1916.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE ST MARKS STREET MEMORIAL. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, GERTRUDE STATHERS.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE WILLIAM HENRY STATHERS 12/72. Born in 1888, William was one of seven children to William and Mary Stather, of 57, Dansom Lane, Hull. A Labourer by trade he lived with his wife Gertrude at 50 St Mark’s Street. William enlisted at City Hall in September 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals. After serving in Egypt over the Winter of 1915 the Pals arrived in France early in March the following year and were immediately thrown into the trenches of the Western Front. William was killed in action on the Somme on 13th November 1916 and his body was never recovered; his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial- he was 28 years old.
