Born Hull, 1886. Only Son of Thomas and Catherine C. Stead, of 4, Pearson Street, Hull. Son of a steam engine fitter. He had six sisters.
He worked as a Cab driver. Described as 5 foot, 9 inches tall, 159 lbs weight, 37-39 inch chest.
He married, Mary Ethel Sunman (1885-1952) and had three children, Gladys, William and Joseph. They lived at 42, West Street, Hull (War Pension address).
He enlisted in the Hull Pals, on 17/11/1914. Served with the 13th East Yorkshire Regiment. He was discharged from the army on 15/01/1915. Died of Tuberculosis of the lung, on 06/02/1915, aged 28. His widow was awarded a weekly war pension, of 23 shillings and sixpence, on 04/04/1917.
