Stephens, Alfred

Born 12 Aug 1891 Cowes, Hampshire. Only Son of Alfred Stephens (1860-1911) and Mary Ann Ingram (1863-1937), of Cowes, Isle of Wight, of Granville Road, Cowes. He had one sister, Lydia.

He was a Ships Painter Apprentice. Described as 5 foot, 10 inches tall, 38-40 inch chest, 159 lbs weight, good physical development.

Married at Newport, on 2 Jun 1916. Husband of Marguerite Snell Stephens, of 54, Westbourne Avenue, Hull (war pension address). They had a daughter, Phyllis Higgs (born 3/1/1909) from his wife’s previous marriage.

He enlisted on 11/12/1915. Called up on 3/6/1916. Posted to France, on 16/11/1916. Served in the Royal Garrison Artillery, 172nd Siege Battery.

Accidentally drowned on 24 December 1918, Aged 28. He fell through a hedge off the side of the road, in the rain and dark, returning to Billets, at night. He is buried at PADUA MAIN CEMETERY, Italy.

He left £300 in his will to his sister Linda Stephens, spinster.
