BORN WILLERBY 15/08/1892. ELDEST SON OF NEVILLE STEPHENSON (1865-1945) & MARY JANE BURGESS (1865-1949), OF WILLERBY, HULL. BROTHER TO CYRIL, DOROTHY AND GWENDOLINE. HIS FATHER, WHO WAS A BUILDING CONTRACTOR. EDUCATED AT HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL. NEVILLE WAS EMPLOYED AS A CLERK, FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS.

HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 11/12/1915, AGED 23 YEARS AND 120 DAYS. JOINING THE HULL PALS. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT 4 INCHES TALL, 110 LBS WEIGHT, 32.5 INCH CHEST. HE WORE GLASSES.

SERVED IN ENGLAND, WITH THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. DIED OF ACUTE RHEUMATISM, AT ELIPSTONE CAMP, MANSFIELD, ON 11/02/1916, AT 12.35AM, AGED 23. THIS WAS ATTRIBUTED TO HIS MILITARY SERVICE. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 92 DAYS. NEVILLE IS BURIED AT KIRKELLA. ONLY SERVED 92 DAYS.

HIS ONLY, YOUNGER BROTHER, SAPPER, CYRIL STEPHENSON, ROYAL ENGINEERS, WAS KILLED IN ACTION A YEAR LATER, ON 05/09/1917, AGED 21 YEARS.

THE NAMES OF BOTH BROTHERS ARE RECORDED ON THE HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL WW1 MEMORIAL AND THE KIRKELLA WAR MEMORIAL AT ST ANDREWS’ CHURCH.
