BORN SCARBOROUGH 1883. SON OF CHARLES STEWARD (1847-1900) AND AGNES STEWARD, OF 7, MARLBOROUGH TERRACE, NORFOLK STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS) AND 19, FRANCIS STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND A SISTER. HIS WIDOWED MOTHER WAS A WARDROBE DEALER.
A PROFESSIONAL SOLDIER. HE SERVED 14 YEARS WITH THE MANCHESTER REGIMENT. THEN WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER IN GRIMSBY (1911 CENSUS)
HE MARRIED ELIZABETH ELLEN RYNES (1893- ), AT GRIMSBY, IN 1911, AGED 29. HE WAS A WIDOWER WITH TWO CHILDREN, LIVING AT 6, EMMELINE TERRACE, ST PAUL STREET, HULL (OBITUARY REPORT).
HE REJOINED HIS REGIMENT WHEN WAR BEGAN. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 27/10/1914. WOUNDED ON 17/04/1915, WITH SHRAPNEL TO THE HEAD AND LEG. INVALIDED TO MANCHESTER HOSPITAL AND LADY SHEFFIELDS’ CHESHIRE RECRUITMENT HOME. AFTER CONVALENSCENE, HE WAS POSTED TO THE OFFICERS TRAINING CAMP, HORNSEA FOR LIGHT DUTIES. HE DIED OF HEART TROUBLE, ON 13/09/1915, AGED 33.
HE WAS GIVEN A FULL MILITARY FUNERAL AND BURIED AT HORNSEA CEMETERY.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS SISTER, SARAH ANN FAICHNEY (1873-1937), GUARDIAN OF HIS CHILDREN (ONE OF WHICH DIED YOUNG).
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, AT ST CHARLES’ CHURCH BORROMEO CHURCH, JARRATT STREET, HULL.

HIS BROTHER SAMUAL (SAMMY) STEWARD, ENLISTED IN HULL, SERVED AS PRIVATE, 30300, YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND PRIVATE, 137740, ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS, AND DIED OF PNEUMONIA, AT CORK, IRELAND, 23/06/1918, AGED 28.
