BORN WHITBY 1880. SON OF CHARLES STEWARD (1847-1900) AND AGNES STEWARD, OF 7, MARLBOROUGH TERRACE, NORFOLK STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS) AND 19, FRANCIS STREET, HULL (CWGC & WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND A SISTER. HIS WIDOWED MOTHER WAS A WARDROBE DEALER. SHE DIED ON 22/10/1921.
HE WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER. HE WAS IMPRISONED FOR THREE MONTHS FOR BREAKING INTO HIS MOTHER’S HOUSE, WITH A KNIFE, STEALING HER CLOTHING AND PAWNING THE ARTICLES.
SAMUAL (SAMMY) STEWARD, ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 30300, YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND PRIVATE, 137740, ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS, AND DIED OF PNEUMONIA, AT CORK, IRELAND, 23/06/1918, AGED 28.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON HULL’S WENLOCK BARRACKS ROLL OF HONOUR. ALSO RECORDED ON THE ST CHARLES’ BORROMEO CHURCH MEMORIAL, JARRATT STREET, HULL, WITH HIS BROTHER, ROBERT STEWARD.
ROBERT WAS A PROFESSIONAL SOLDIER AND DOCK LABOURER, WHO HAD SERVED 14 YEARS WITH THE 3RD MANCHESTER REGIMENT. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 27/10/1914. HE WAS WOUNDED ON 17/04/1915, WITH SHRAPNEL TO THE HEAD AND LEG. INVALIDED TO MANCHESTER AND SHEFFIELD HOSPITALS. HE WAS POSTED TO THE OFFICERS TRAINING CAMP, HORNSEA FOR LIGHT DUTIES. HE DIED OF HEART TROUBLE, ON 13/09/1915, AGED 33. HE WAS GIVEN A FULL MILITARY FUNERAL AND BURIED AT HORNSEA CEMETERY. HE WAS A WIDOWER, WITH TWO CHILDREN, LIVING AT 6, EMMELINE TERRACE, ST PAUL STREET, HULL (OBITUARY REPORT).
