BORN HULL 1881. SON OF FREDERICK STONES (1852-1932) & CAROLINE LONGTHORNE (1854-1922), OF 49, ST ANDREWS STREET, HULL. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. SON OF A FISH SALESMAN.

HE MARRIED GERTRUDE COURTNEY (1881-1949), IN HULL, IN 1902. WORKED AS A BOX WOOD SAWYER. HE LIVED AT 10, FERN AVENUE, EASTBOURNE STREET, 18, TRENT AVENUE, EASTBOURNE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS), AND 7, DE LA POLE AVENUE, HULL. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN, ALBERT VICTOR, GERTRUDE AND JAMES HENRY STONES.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 4118, EYR. HE TRANSFERRED TO THE 5TH BORDER REGIMENT AND WAS KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON 16/09/1916, AGED 35. BURIED AT DEVILL WOOD CEMETERY, LONGUEVAL, FRANCE.

HE IS ALSO COMMEMORATED AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
HIS BROTHER, ALBERT STONES, DROWNED ON THE TRAWLER ‘WINDWARD HO’, ON 09/05/1917. HIS BROTHERS, WILLIAM STONES, DIED IN HULL, IN 1916, AGED 38, AND ERNEST STONES (1891-1968) SERVED IN THE ROYAL NAVY RESERVE.
