BORN HULL 1882. ONLY SON OF EMMA (1839-1883) AND JOHN STOTHARD, AN ELDERLY WIDOWER, LIVING IN SUTTON, STONEFERRY, HULL. HIS PARENTS DIED WHILE HE WAS YOUNG AND HE HAD NO SIBLINGS. HE MARRIED GERTRUDE ABRAM, AT HULL ON 30/03/1907. THEIR SON DAVID WAS BORN ON 21/06/1907. THE FAMILY LIVED AT 6 FERNDALE, REDCAR STREET HULL (ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS).

EMPLOYED AS A WOOD SAWYER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 8.5 INCHES TALL, 137 LBS WEIGHT, 37-40 INCH CHEST, GOOD PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT.

HE ENLISTED AT HULL ON 24/06/1916. CALLED UP FOR SERVICE ON 12/03/1917, AGED 34 YEARS AND 11 MONTHS.  FORMERLY PRIVATE, 39863 DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 03/06/1917. TRANSFERRED TO THE 2ND/7TH MANCHESTER REGIMENT, ON 22/06/1917. DIED OF GUNSHOT WOUNDS TO THE GROIN, ON 29/03/1918, AGED 36, AT 5TH GENERAL HOSPITAL, ROUEN, FRANCE. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 279 DAYS.

HIS WIDOW, GERTRUDE,  RECEIVED A WEEKLY PENSON OF 20 SHILLING AND 5 PENCE FOR HERSELF AND SON.
