BORN HULL 1889. SON OF WILLIAM & LILLY MATHILDA SMITH (1865-1947), OF 2, ELDON GROVE, GRANVILLE STREET, HULL AND 112 HESSLE ROAD, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND . HIS FATHER RAN THE BUTCHER’S SHOP AT 112, HESSLE ROAD. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS, SYDNEY, HERBERT AND ALFRED.
HE MARRIED CLARA CHAPMAN (1891-1940), AT ST LUKES CHURCH, HULL, ON 18TH APRIL 1914. HE LIVED WITH HIS WIFE, CLARA, AT 84, CLIFTON TERRACE, JANE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS) AND 1, LUKES TERRACE, WALKER STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS). THEY HAD ONE SON, WILLIAM HERBERT STUBBS, BORN ON 25TH JUNE 1914.
HE WAS A BUTCHER’S ASSISTANT. BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH AND ARGENTINA MEAT COMPANY IN HULL. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 8 INCHES TALL, 34-36 INCH CHEST, 134 LBS WEIGHT, GOOD PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 11/12/1915. CALLED UP FOR SERVICE, ON 30/05/1916. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 18/09/1916.
WOUNDED IN THE LEFT SHOULDER, ON 13/11/1916 , AT SERRE AND HIS PHOTO APPEARED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 23RD NOVEMBER 1916. HE RETURNED TO FRANCE, ON 20/04/1917 AND POSTED TOTHE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. PROMOTED TO CORPORAL. TAKEN PRISONER. ON 10/04/1918.
HE DIED A PRISONER OF WAR IN GERMANY, ON 02/07/1918, AGED 29. BURIED AT NEIDERZWEHREN CEMETERY, KASSAL, GERMANY (Plot 2, Row C, Grave 16.
HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 2 YEARS AND 205 DAYS.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 23RD OCTOBER 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE WAS COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
